Ms. Mary Aspinwall,

Thank you very much for your quick response. And I appreciate your offer of a free book on homeopathy.  It means a great deal to me! As for the Basic Kit, I have decided to keep it because there are  some products I also need which are not included in the travel kit. Thank you very much.

When I first started on the internet, I quickly began searching for homeopathy related sites. But I just couldn't find any that was useful, not to mention online shops! Now I'm glad that it is becoming more popular here as well as in all other countries.

Please keep up with your good work!

Best regards,

 Miharu Kunoki

An alternative first-aid kit

by Lesley Turney

(Review of the Basic 18 kit)

Most of us have a bathroom cabinet full of mainstream remedies such as aspirin, cough mixture and antiseptic ointment. But how do you treat minor emergencies if you prefer alternative therapies? Help is at hand in the form of a homoeopathic first-aid kit. Produced by Helios Homeopathics, the kit contains18 individual remedies for conditions as diverse as hemorrhoids and jet lag.

The kit which is small enough to fit in a handbag (or purse in American English), holds glass bottles containing the remedies in sucrose pill  form. They can be used on their own or in a variety of combinations where necessary.

It comes with a comprehensive prescribing guide and even if the symptoms experienced are not listed , by cross-referencing to the description of each remedy and what it does, specific treatments for any symptom can be found. ( "A slight exaggeration!" - Mary)

The kit was designed by practising homoeopaths, with the intention of making homeopathy accessible to everyone. John Morgan of Helios, who graduated as an orthodox pharmacist, before training as a homeopath, says: "People are often caught off-guard when it comes to treating minor injuries, which is why this range is specially formulated to cover a significant proportion of the most common injuries and ailments".

Homeopathy - literally 'similar suffering' - is a system of medicine based on the principle that a substance which can produce symptoms in a healthy person can help cure those symptoms in a sick person, by stimulating the body's natural healing responses.

For example, a person suffering from hay fever  might be given a remedy prepared form an onion, because in a healthy person, close contact with onions usually produces watering eyes and irritation.

The substances are given in minute doses, which makes them safe to use even in circumstances where the use of conventional drugs would be inadvisable. It is not yet understood how homeopathy works, because the remedies are often so dilute that not even a molecule of the original substance remains. Skeptics conclude that any beneficial response is probably due to the placebo effect, but this is unlikely as homeopathic medicines are particularly effective in the treatment of young children and animals.

"We think the processes used in making the medicines leave an imprint of the original substance's energy pattern in the dilutant, which somehow stimulates the body's own healing energy to start responding."

Rebecca Mayhew, an accountant from London, was converted to homeopathy ten years ago, after conventional medicines failed to stop persistent sneezing. She has been using a self-prescribing homeopathy kit for several weeks and says it has come in handy on many occasions.

"I've used remedies to help a friend who was in pain after an operation, for somebody who was very unhappy after a relationship broke up and for a baby with teething pains," says Rebecca, 36. "The kit helped my husband, Mark, when he had a violent stomach upset and I treated the whole family when we were on holiday and woke up with hangovers.

It's very exciting and very useful, although obviously you have to use it with a degree of care and responsibility."

There are two basic rules recommended by the kit manufacturers. First, the symptom picture of the illness or injury should be as closely matched as possible to the medicine. Second as little medicine as possible should be used to stimulate the body's own healing mechanism. Doses should be repeated only if symptoms stop improving or return after a certain time.

Dr David Murfim, former vice chairman of the Royal College of General Practitioners says:" People do become frustrated by conventional medicines and many GPs are opening their minds to alternatives. Homeopathy is no longer the taboo that it once was and is available on the National Health Service.

However the bottom line is that any lumps, bumps or symptoms which can't be easily explained should be seen by a professional in the first instance to be on the safe side."

Director of research at the Royal London Homeopathic Hospital , Dr Peter Fisher  says of the kit:" It is safe and helpful for minor obvious problems".

Helios Homeopathy Kit for Labour

...this kit has a wide range of remedies for before, during and after birth. 9 out of 10 marks

That's Life Magazine - June 1998 Kids are Us Page

My Body, My Baby,  My Choice

...I got in touch with Valerie Taylor, an independent midwife.  She told me she used a kit containing 18 homeopathic remedies to treat women in Labour.

Valerie said it would help me cope with anxiety and allow my body to deal with labour without resorting to conventional drugs - at least that was the idea...

She examined me and found I was about 3cm dilated.  At 1:40 she gave me a remedy to help calm me down.  Within half an hour, I felt more relaxed.  At 2:30 I got into the (birthing) pool... I had another calming remedy at 3am.

Half an hour later I was getting tired, so I took a tablet to give me an energy boost, but by 5am the labour had slowed down...

I was given another remedy to bring on the contractions.  They were soon strong and regular.  By 6am, my body seemed to be doing all the work itself, but the pain was still intense.  Valerie gave me gas and air...

And at 6:33am my son Jason was born, weighing 8lb 14oz.  Putting him to my breast I felt so proud.

I was back to normal 12 days after the birth.  If I have another child, I'll use homeopathy again.  It's a great alternative that puts the woman back in control.

"The childbirth kit Rachel used has 18 remedies to help before, during and after labour.  They can soothe prebirth anxiety, dilate the cervix, ease exhaustion and aid contractions.  After delivery, they can help speed up the healing process.  If you want to use one, tell your midwife and buy it early so you and your partner are familiar with it.  It comes with a guide, but it's advisable to check the uses with your midwife."

We would love to add your feedback, please send us any comments or stories of how you used the kits and we will add them to this page.
